The main theme of Expo Milan 2015 is Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. According to Guidelines for Participants countries can also choose one of sub-themes. Latvia has decided to work with Food and culture for better life.

For the first time ever, Ministry of Economics of Latvia organised sketch design competition for architecture and content of the national pavilion. A jury commission of 12 experts evaluated applications and conducted interviews to select the best of 10 rivalling bids, awarding the right of implementing its concept for Latvian Pavilion to limited partnership EXPO 2015 L.P.

Oak tree-shaped wooden structure will resemble Latvia’s biodiversity, and highlight the leading national sectors and experience in promoting sustainable business. Latvia will assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2015, succeeding Italy, therefore its participation in Milan Expo will draw close attention of political and diplomatic circles.

Oak tree symbolises firm belief of our people in harmonious and respectful coexistence of a man and nature as the only way to preserving the long-term integrity of the vast and diverse ecosystem.
A tree that combines centuries of architectural advancement and modern digital technologies will give an insight into Latvia’s ecosystem and an opportunity to experience Latvia.
The canopy, the trunk and the roots section of the tree will evoke different emotions and feelings. The tree will provide a refreshing shade everywhere, urging visitors to stay a while longer.
Latvia’s exposition, the total area of which would reach around 600m2 according to plans, will be accessible and viewable from three sides. That will help spread visitor flows more evenly and allow large masses of visitors to enter and move around the pavilion with greater convenience. Conference Centre located underneath the canopy will become the venue for active exchange of ideas between invited speakers, and roots of the tree will serve as an extension of the exposition with separate rooms.
Latvian Pavilion will occupy Plot N14 with total area of 1 147m2. Plot is located near the main entrance through which, according to the estimations of the Expo organisers, some 60% of visitors will come.

Architectural design of the pavilion is fully in line with the concept of the Latvian exposition as it blends the pavilion and exposition together perfectly.
The team behind the concept of the national pavilion consists of new generation professionals - experts in different areas brought together by Positivus Event, an entity responsible for many successful years of Positivus festival, the biggest music and arts festival in Baltics, and technical producers of the Grand Gala of the XXV Nationwide Song and Dance Festival.
Architecture and design of the pavilion had been created by architects Miķelis Putrāms and Linda Krūmiņa (MADE arhitekti), winners of 2012 Latvian Architecture Grand Prix, artist Rolands Pēterkops (MAREUNROL’S duo), participant and winner of numerous international fashion and art festivals, and Mārtiņš Pīlēns (Manager of 1PLUS1 architectural studio), finalist and winner of several Latvian Architecture Grand Prix.
Wide, open space inside the pavilion, underneath the massive branches of an oak tree, will be full of interactive information, tingling all five senses of visitors. Various architectural, interior and design features, visual identity developed by design agency Brandbox, branch of McCann WorldGroup Riga, and technical solutions developed by CUBE will contribute to an unforgettable aesthetic quality of pavilion. Producers’ Group Positivus Event and Sigvards Kļava, Artistic Director of Latvian Radio Choir, winner of numerous Latvian Grand Music Awards, will make sure that music played underneath the canopy is unforgettable experience for visitors. The chef and author of the slow food concept of the Latvian pavilion, Mārtiņš Rītiņš, will create delicacies that will tingle everyone’s taste buds, but the smell of Latvia in Milan will come from natural materials of the exposition, wood and freshly-baked bread.
The new “EXPO 2015”bureau of Latvia is in charge of supervising the operation and events of Latvian Pavilion. Latvian Pavilion of Expo Milan 2015 will hold a great variety of business and culture events, including Latvia’s National Day, showing Milan all the best that Latvia can offer.

Switzerland in the strict sense of taste to discover through its specialty food and Switzerland in the broad sense of taste to discover through the architecture, design, culture, tourism and transport.

French Pavilion at Expo 2015: Wood and complex geometry 

The design of the France Pavilion at Expo 2015 is a team of architectural firms. To conceive: XTU Architectes, ALN Atelien Architecture and study Rispal Adelin, in conjunction with studies specialist acoustic engineers in the development of multimedia content and lighting design. To build fifteen French companies, Italian and German.

A universal represent France at the event, will be a large wooden pavilion, with 3600 square meters for a public investment of 20 millions euro. Like the other national pavilions, will contribute to the development of the theme "Feeding the Planet. Energy for Life. "

The structure will be built in wood Jura, consisting of free form united assemblies completely invisible, and designed to be assembled and disassembled easily. The shape comes from three-dimensional image: a portion of the soil with reliefs and depressions, sectioned and overturned on the ground, showing therefore inside a succession is concavity and convexity. Architecture "bare and essential."

Great attention to the use of passive bioclimatic architecture: the building has low energy consumption and reliance on natural ventilation and cooling.

The route will be developed first through a garden maze and lustful, that represent the diversity of the landscapes and the succession of the different regions of France, and then enter the building, greeted by the great pillars of time, materials and experiences, olfactory, receiving various information of interest nationally and globally.

Competition for designing the Polish Pavilion at EXPO 2015

On 15th April, PAIiIZ announced the competition for designing the Polish Pavilion at EXPO 2015. The contests also includes designing internal exposition in the pavilion and its surroundings. The contest is dedicated to architects. The Union of Polish Architects (SARP) is the Patron of the merits of the competition.

“We expect that the authors of the projects will creatively develop the guidelines of Polish participation in the EXPO 2015 described in the >>EXPO 2015 Concept Programme<< adopted by the Council of Ministers, which is a background of the economic and cultural presentation of Poland at the exhibition”, said Sławomir Majman, PAIiIZ president and the General Commissioner of the Polish Section at EXPO 2015.

The Jury, chaired by vice-president of the SARP, architect Włodzimierz Mucha will assess projects guided by three main criteria: the uniqueness and attractiveness of each project, accuracy of selected architectural solutions and optimization in terms of deadlines and budget.

The participation form should be submitted to PAIiIZ by 24 April 2014 until 15.00. The deadline for projects’ presentation is  21 May 2014 by 15.00. The finalist will be chosen on 26 May, 2014.(PAIiIZ)

The Concept

Austria is world-renowned as a country of culture, with a high standard of living. Austria’s key aim at the Expo Milano 2015 is to reinforce its reputation worldwide as an attractive place to live. Inside its 1,910 square meter exposition site, it showcases the naturally high standards and recreational spaces that make it so well-regarded.

Its positive image are enriched by new elements, such as the landscape and climate, playing a key role in driving awareness around the use of sustainable resources.
A large quantity of food is already produced with sustainable techniques and the range of organic products available to consumers in supermarkets is higher than anywhere else in Europe. Encouraging strong connections between producers, sellers and consumers is central to Austria’s thematic itinerary of food sustainability; its cuisine is the result of its cultural characteristics, being Austria a culturally independent country within the German-speaking world. Another feature of its exposition is the purity of its climate, air and environment.

The Concept

In keeping with the theme of Expo Milano 2015, Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life, Romania offers visitors an intricate view of its Country’s characteristics, its resources and its potential. The goal is to share the essence of the Romanian spirit and the coexistence of biodiversity, agricultural potential, traditional practices, folklore, and hospitality.

The key message that Romania wishes to spread at Expo Milano 2015 is that Romania is a country living in harmony with nature, where traditions blend with modernity, offering the world accessible food resources that are affordable, sustainable, reliable and able to promote a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Angola pavilion... theme statement

The chosen theme for the Angolan participation is “Food and Culture: Education for Innovation”, a theme that allows for a wider reflection anchored in the Culture, the Soul and the Expression of a country through its richness and culinary culture.

With this in mind, we want to show the world the richness and cultural diversity of Angolan cuisine, as well as rituals and traditions associated with it. The Angolan exhibition intends to be a journey, which will engage visitors to discover aspects of Angolan Culture, both native and assimilated from other cultures, the products that form the basis of Angolan’s nutrition, what those products are and how they will be used by the actual and future generations towards a healthier and sustainable lifestyle.
The chosen slogan “Education for Innovation” outlooks the future – Education meaning essentially to take care of the future and innovation, a word in constant re-definition, keeping in mind knowledge, raising awareness and the perceptions for the visitors that Angolans are building their own future.

Conceptual and educational plan
As mentioned above in the introduction, “Food and Culture” allows for a wider reflection on the social behaviour, identity and lifestyle and its relation to the history and culinary traditions.
In this view, “Education” is understood as the effort to create awareness at various levels of the Angolan society towards the subject of nourishment and food. Be it teaching in schools and colleges, the effort to create regulations for locally manufactured and imported food products or introducing standards at local food stalls and markets. “Innovation” entails on the one hand the encouragement of “good practices” found indigenously in Angola, such as century-old wisdoms and customs that research has revealed to be healthy and sustainable, on the other hand incorporating new technologies and high end science for an altogether holistic development path.
The Angolan exhibition will showcase both these efforts, with particular emphasis in the role of women as pillars of the home, transition of wisdom and of the food supply chains. Women play a very important role in the production and preparation of food, and are influential in the cultural processes of maternity, family management, hygiene, health, safety, home economy and education – not only factual but also in the direct transmission of culture and values.

Architecture and technology
The Pavilion will be structured in accordance to the contents in display, and intends to be a clear expression of such contents. For this, we will use every available technology at our disposal, to create an integrated interior / exterior exhibition environment that showcases and engages visitors in the Angolan Lifestyle.
There will be an outdoor garden zone and a vegetable garden, where Angolan plants and food will be cultivated and visitors can interact with those. Traditionally, Angolan pavilions also have an art gallery space and two restaurant spaces. There will be also an administrative zone, clearly separated from the exhibition area.
We shall use a simple construction of the pavilion structure that can be easily dismantled and we will pay special attention to use sustainable materials. We intend to create a memorable experience by inviting the participants to experience the Angolan lifestyle both by virtue of using technology and augmented reality and also by providing tactile and physical experiences, though their interaction with natural materials.

Exhibits and active content
“Food and Culture: Education for Innovation” will transmit the message that Angola is growing and developing its own methods for food safety and control. Visitors will have an interactive experience that showcases such efforts and will be able to understand its relevance within the wider context of Angola, transporting a general idea of the country and its geography, cultural heritage, history and diversity.
There will be shows, entertainment and cultural performances by Angolan groups, both within the Pavilion and outside on Expo stages and other forums. This is to transmit the messages of the chosen theme, the vitality of the Angolan people and their positive look at the future, ready to interact with the visitors and other participant entities.

Commercial activities and food services
The Angolan Pavilion will have two restaurants, one for normal public and serving Angolan dishes and a second smaller one, which will be a laboratory to create the “New Angolan Cuisine” – fusion dishes prepared and tasted in collaboration with guest chefs and visitors.
In addition, there will be a bazaar that sells Angolan handicraft, music recordings and merchandising items; part of the area will also be a thematic bazaar, offering some of Angola’s teas, coffees and dried fruits.

Competition Entry: Russian Pavilion (Milan Expo 2015) / Architects of Invention

London-Moscow-Tbilisi-based practice Architects of Invention has completed a proposal for the Russian Pavilion at the 2015 Milan Expo as a part of the Expo’s Herzog  & de Meuron-designed masterplan. Designed to evoke the connotation that Russia is one of the biggest agriculture exporters in the world, the pavilion “Russia: The Fields of Growth” will contribute to the Expo’s theme of “Feeding the Planet”, and at the same time introduce a dynamic and powerful image of the modern Russia that originates in the country’s great past.

This architectural solution is based on one conceptual act: the use of a large-scale form (single bend of a plane) that originates in the monumental traditions of the best of twentieth century Soviet architecture.

A 17-meter long Stella indicates the main entrance to the pavilion from the main pedestrian artery of the exhibition, and continues into the field-roof. Inside, the walls and ceiling of the pavilion is designed as an interactive screen with constantly changing images. On top of the pavilion, there is a landscaped garden, where visitors can pass time throughout the day. Thus, the dynamic architecture of the pavilion emphasizes the continuous link between technology and nature.

The proposed concept is an example of so-called ‘quantum’ architecture, since the roof and the wall comprise single form, where the natural and the technological complement each other. Such an approach fits well into the latest trends of modern architecture, and puts the Russian Pavilion on an equal footing among other national pavilions, combining depth of analysis and contemporary design.

The USA Pavilion is a one-of-a-kind building designed by award-winning architect James Biber of Biber Architects in New York. It is a 35,000 square foot space within Expo Milano’s 3.6 million square foot sustainable “smart city.” The building is a multi-level experience that flows with activity from top to bottom, side to side.
