Malaysia... Nation to shine at Milano Expo !

MILAN: The “sustainability seeds” of 1Malaysia are taking shape here as Malaysia exhibits its role in ensuring healthy and sustainable food.

Four rainforest seed buildings are being constructed at the Milano Expo 2015 site, drawing interest from Italian architects.

It is structurally complex but aesthetic, using ultra-light glulam, or glued laminated timber from Malaysia.

The ramps and walkways of the 2,047 sq metre site for the Malaysian pavilion is made of reconstituted rice husk decking, a recycled material from padi.

The expo, to be held from May 1 till Oct 31 next year, will attract 142 participants from 50 countries and 24 million visitors.

International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, whose ministry is coordinating the construction, said the unique concept encompasses all aspects of Malaysia — be it from an agricultural, tourism, cultural or social standpoint.

“Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” addresses the theme of food and nutrition from a historical, cultural, medical, scientific, economic and environmental point of view.

Mustapa said the humble rainforest seed reflected the country’s transformation in the economy, from one based primarily on commodities and agriculture through export-oriented industrialisation to one that was driven by higher value-added industries and services.
