Japan pavilion... the success !

Theme "Harmonious Diversity"

The Concept

Japan joins Expo Milano 2015 with the aim of proposing its food culture as an example of a healthy, sustainable and balanced diet, and as a model that can alleviate the problems of hunger and global ecology. By the same token, it also sees this event as the perfect opportunity for promoting its image following the 2011 earthquake, encouraging tourism and business opportunities.

Japan’s participation unfurls essentially around two words: Health and Edutainment, or educational entertainment. Its typical dishes, based on rice, raw fish and vegetables are proposed as a balanced way of eating, contrasting with the excesses that can lead to obesity for a billion people. Projects for schools are also a vehicle for traditional concepts encouraging sharing and discouraging wastefulness.

The government has been working since 2005 to educate families on food awareness and seeks recognition from UNESCO for the Japanese diet as a cultural heritage of humanity.

Harmony (environmental and aesthetic) and technology, are added to these themes, articulating elements of food preservation on the one hand, and transport systems and food distribution on the other.

Pavilion Architecture

"Utsuwa" is the term to describe the traditional Japanese ceramics that are characterized by
many different styles, and likewise, its pavilion symbolizes the wealth and the multiplicity of
Japan’s culture. Representing the fusion between tradition and modernity, environmental and
aesthetic perfection, Japan proposes a pavilion that spreads over an exhibition area of 4,170
square meters, with a wide entrance and lengthwise orientation, like one of the traditional
houses of Kyoto. In addition to the use of natural materials such as bamboo and wood, it
makes use of technologies and systems for energy conservation. Furthermore, a range
of events and installations stimulate the five senses, allowing visitors to fully experience
Japan’s food culture.

Malaysia pavilion at Expo 2015 Milano

Soon the end of the event, and we are far from having been around, I have prioritized the favorites and memorable experiences, but I forget some, for lack of time ... I certainly have the opportunity to return to the pavilions of Expo Milano 2015 in the coming weeks, months ... years.

However ephemeral, Expos are magic, this ability to remain in our memories and even our hearts, as these events are strong, instructive and fun.

Meanwhile, we continue the visit of the Expo, with the pavilion of Malaysia, which holds a place very special in my "virtual"ranking of the best pavilions "selfbuilt" of this Milanese Expo.

Indeed, already, because of its architectural concept, it deserves our interest ... these seeds are undoubtedly an almost perfect reflection of the general theme of Expo ... to feed the planet, we must plant seeds... Moreover, the theme of the pavilion is "Towards a sustainable food ecosystem ... even the main material of the pavilion is also... with the wood in majority in this original construction.

This is the famous Glulam, a laminated exotic wood ... which does not use any piece of wood of 65 x 12 cm ... easy transport, but also handling the parts without using large means of mechanical lift. Note that none of the thousands of pieces are alike! a nice feat !

Visually, this building is therefore a success, composed of 4 main seeds, which naturally demarcate the different experiences living in this pavilion of Malaysia.

Luckily, the queue is still quite small in early July ... which is not the case right now, a lot of visitors from August to October ... and a huge success for the pavilion.

Seed 1
We enter the first seed, which is simply a theater. We are based all around, and the projection takes place on the walls of the seed... the magnificent movie that is proposed we present Malaysia of today, magical, and especially Malaysia of tomorrow, with a full ascension of the country. A beautiful experience, which also makes you want to discover this beautiful country, full of promise!

Seed 2
Then, the second seed leads us in very fun way to the discovery of the ecosystem and bio-diversity of a tropical forest, through a life-size diorama, in which we operate on two levels, to reach the following exposure room. Needless to say, this diorama is particularly popular with visitors ... large and small! This is the change of scenery in Milan, in this Expo that allows to visit several countries in a single day.

Seed 3
The third seed covers topics priori much more serious, such as the role of rubber in the food supply chain, but always exciting and fun, or as interactive fireflies flying... among others. We also discover many artistic presentations that add to the quality of the set design... a real delight for the eyes. A section is also dedicated to medicinal plants.

In the mezzanine, it is the future that appears ... but for Malaysia, the future is now. One can discover in this last part of the Malaysian exhibition, with many interactive screens or not, that Malaysia has already made to protect the planet, men who live there, in terms of innovation and sustainable development.

As can be seen, pavilion of Malaysia offers a rich and contrasting experience, and is not confined to a single point of the theme.

Seed 4

But the visit is not over, we go down by an external staircase from the very big third seed in Glulam, toward the fourth, which is dedicated to culture and to diverse shows that are presented in the pavilion Malaysia. Dances, songs, activities are offered daily. It's a living pavilion, and every time a great success, clearly visible on the faces of spectators. The team pavilion is also for many. The staff is really incredible of kindness and conviviality prevails in this pavilion, where everyone receives us with a smile and lots of good humor. The message is simple, bring a smile and unify all cultures of the world with joy and peace ... it's also that, the great power of Expos!

Moreover, we are taken to task in this fourth seed pavilion, by the team and lovely manager Shamilah Perumal, because it's time for Karaoke, in Malay !!! Fortunately, the selected song is quite easy, so it was very funny to participate ... everyone goes!

The experience would not be complete if we don't also taste the pavilion restaurant. Unable to resist these Malaysian dishes, a treat, a pleasure for our taste buds ...
Kopitiam and Malaysian market offer us drinks and dishes with unique flavors and tastes ... we strongly advise visitors to test.... and approve ...!

Some additional words :

The visit of the pavilion of Malaysia is now finished, and I would like to warmly thank the director of the pavilion, Shamilah Perumal. First for her wonderful welcome, which certainly reflects the friendly people of this country, but above all for all the work she has done for this pavilion in Expo Milano 2015 is a success.

She was there upstream in the design of the pavilion, she was there when building ! Shamilah ... everything led "masterfully" to make it a success. And for six months of the Expo, she's everywhere, settle every detail, and when we know what demands effort as managing a pavilion of a World Expo, we're all the more amazed.

Shamilah has been omnipresent in the project, and besides, I could see she was congratulated by the highest authorities of his country, for his hard work and total abnegation.

Congratulations also Shamilah for his humanity and kindness which is felt even in the pavilion staff who exude joy, and above all, to participate in this great event in the pavilion of Malaysia and it's contagious, it seems, to all visitors.

I have also seen her fame with the colleagues from other pavilions at the Expo ... there are signs that don't lie. Shamilah, receive all our sincere congratulations! or should I say SUPERSHAMILAH !!

Hope to see you again ... at the next Expo !! 2017 or 2020 in Astana ... Dubai? ... or before, in Malaysia ;-)

Argentina pavilion at Expo 2015 Milano

Theme “Argentina feeds you”

Concept

With its theme “Argentina feeds you” Argentina showcases its country set against a backdrop of national policies that are closely aligned with the central theme of Expo Milano 2015, “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.” It is a theme that offers visitors experiences that feed their understanding of Argentina's richness and diversity in a space that reflects four subtopics. The first, Argentina feeds its people, explores the question of food security within its economic development policies of the past ten years based on social inclusion; the second, Argentina feeds the world, describes the vastness and fertility of its land that produces a wide variety of primary products such as cereals, fruits, vegetables, meat, products from the sea but also a wide range of value-added products consumed and recognized all around the world; the third, Argentina feeds knowledge, offers visitors a view of its inclusive and sustainable innovation, that facilitates and promotes research and technologic development, boosting the development of highest competitiveness and value-added to Argentina's production. The last, Argentina feeds debate, looks at the global paradigm and the challenges of capitalism, food sovereignty and equal development.

In this context, Argentina seeks to open debates on issues such as agricultural protectionism, free trade agreements, sanitary and phyto-sanitary measures, global value chains and speculation on food commodities. Contents are shared through audiovisual resources, simulators, interactive systems, multisensory spaces, cultural events and a varied and characteristic gastronomic selection, among other offerings. Articulated through these four strategic pillars, the overall theme embodies Argentina’s power and energy as a developing country that promotes social inclusion policies to relieve hunger, and as a global supplier of quality and value-added food and beverages goods It also captures Argentina’s commitment to scientific-technological innovations for a frank and multilateral debate on future global food challenges facing a billion people in years to come.

North Korea at Expo 2015 Milano

Today is the National Day of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea  to Milano Expo 2015, but I'm not going to dwell much on this participation, which deserves more for its symbolic presence at the Expo, in the cluster Island Sea-Food, than for the quality of its content. But why not... a late participation is of course better than nothing, even in a little pavilion !

We have the feeling of being in a store... but it's still worth noting the publication of a postcard and a stamp for the occasion, in honor of the flagship product of the pavilion: the ginseng.

Concept

The main objective for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's presence at Expo Milano 2015 is to introduce visitors to Kaesong Koryo Insam (ginseng), a Korean specialty since ancient times and its national food.

The DPRK Pavilion presents two sub-themes: “Gifts of Land” which introduces Kaesong, where and how it is grown and the world-famous elixir it creates from the plant. While the section entitled “Healthy Food” features the excellence of Korean cuisine.

Kaesong Koryo Insam, a Korean specialty which is associated with time-honored history and the wisdom of the Korean nation, has been used as a food and for medicinal purposes for more than 5,000 years. Its mysterious healing powers have been recognized world-wide. Medical science has demonstrated the positive effects of this ginseng on the heart and appetite as well as providing anti-aging benefits to mind and body and even in curing cancer cells.

Over 30,000 species of the plants exist in the world and we use about 2,000 species for medicinal purposes. Among these medicinal plants, it is Kaesong Koryo Insam alone that has been recognized as the "King of Medicinal Plants”.

With high-tech developments increasing around the world, the mysterious efficacy of Kaesong Koryo Insam is taking center stage, as renowned scientific institutions and food specialists shower their praises on this national treasure.

The DPRK Pavilion, housed within the Islands, Sea and Food Cluster displays a variety of their own products made from Kaesong Koryo Insam, ranging from food to cosmetics. A visit to the pavilion will allow visitors to learn about the many powerful and beneficial effects of this plant.

Pavilions of Expo 2015 Milano : MORROCO

Morocco, A Journey of Flavors

Continuing of the Expo Milano 2015 tour... towards the pavilion of Morocco.
This country participates in World Expos since the first, with consistent quality, and each time, show to million visitors a beautiful and original pavilion, with exciting content.
At the Milan Expo, Morocco is no exception to the rule, and offers us a visit, or rather "a journey of flavors", a whole program, to help "feed the world" ... so nice!

The Moroccan Pavilion is located in the eastern part of the Expo, close to the Roserio entrance, in a large space, a beautiful development of the architecture for the less original, but also very typical. The color is given, it's a construction that reminds us kasbah of Ouarzazate, built of adobe, on a wooden structure, like the Berber architecture of southern Morocco. It's both traditional, evocative of the country of origin but also very sustainable, the environment is also one of the major concerns of Morocco!

The Kingdom Morocco is a country that knows very well combine tradition and modernity, we already felt before entering, and of course, also inside the pavilion.

One never tires of admiring the pavilion that seems to invite us to come for a change of scenery for a real immersion in this country so welcoming.

We must thank already the pavilion's team for his kindness and explanations lavished during this visit-discovery. At the entrance of the pavilion, before passing the door, we are greeted by a large portrait of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco, as well as a large map of Morocco, very convenient for the rest of the visit, as we shall see.

The theme of the pavilion is a journey to the "Kingdom" of flavors, an invitation to sensory discoveries able to excite all our senses, thanks to products and Moroccan cuisine. We already appreciate all the wealth, this visit will allow us to discover the secrets and why not, to get acquainted with new products and new practices, both Morocco to share with us, thanks to the diversity of its regions , its climate, its people.

The visit is organized as a crossing of the kingdom, from North to South. Very fluid, the scenography offers us to cross five main areas:

The Mediterranean Sea :
The Mediterranean and its 500-kilometre coastline. Rich with a beautiful waterfront and a breath-taking panorama, northern Morocco is Africa’s gate-way for all travellers. Tangier, Tetouan, Chefchaouen, Al Hoceima... many cities nestled between mountains and sea, lulled by the calm, clear waters only coloured by fine white sand.

The Center :
Central Morocco, the country’s hydraulic basin. Thanks to its abundant flora and water bodies that supply an entire country, the Center is considered as the heart of Morocco. At the foot of the mountains, the forests hold themselves straight up, the vast plains extend to the entire region, and lakes are formed to give life to the entire region. Walking around the area, one can see the beautiful colours of the landscape perfectly shaped by Man.

The Atlas :
The Atlas ... one landscape gives way to another; the calm plains fade away and are replaced by the contours of the mountains. Morocco is the only Maghreb country with a huge mountain chain, the Atlas, which rises to 4,160 meters. This mountain chain brags its steep massifs, its rugged terrain, and its majestic landscape where the villages cling to the slopes and crops resist the altitude.

The Atlantic :
The Atlantic and its coasts, one of the richest fishing grounds in the world. The Moroccan Atlantic coast is characterised by the diversity of its landscapes and its large agricultural plains. From the Agadir fishing port to the beaches of Rabat or Casablanca through the ramparts of Essaouira, Morocco's Atlantic coast offers 1,300 kilometres of varied and contrasting landscapes. That’s where one finds vast lands brushed by sea wind, plains made fertile by irrigation, and dunes succeeding the steep cliffs.

The Great South :
The Great South and Its Desert Climate. Another facet of Morocco opens up to the world... hot and windy Morocco where wadis create oasis and where Men shape their land. Through the ancestral knowledge of Men, the empty vastness formed by the dry and rocky plateaus and dune fields give way to valleys. They give life to the oasis.

What to say about this visit? Certainly, every visitor will appreciate this crossing of Morocco ... each step in the country of the senses, reveals extraordinary, each region is revealed through its products and specialties, but also its specificities. It's very beautiful and very well done ... with increasingly ubiquitous flavors, magic seems perfectly operate.

When talking about visits of pavilions, we often use the term "Experience". For this pavilion of Morocco, we can say that this one is very successful, both in the sense of the theme of the Expo or the one of the pavilion, but especially in that of sensations perceived by the visitor, and therein lies the main!

But our tour of the pavilion is far from over ... and our trip to the land of flavors!
Since it is often customary in the pavilions of the Expo, the tour ends with a passage in the pavilion shop.

But beware, it's not a simple store of goods and souvenirs. Special attention seems to be winning here, to continue this unique "experience" in the heart of Morocco and its products. This Concept Store is very nicely decorated, or scenography should I say, a beautiful invitation, the souks Milan Version 2015, to be seduced.
Then, the last stage before the exit pavilion... ...we could not avoid the famous restaurant Delizie del Marocco, anf the famous Chef Moha (Dar Moha in Marrakech)!

We tasted for you... what are effectively the delights of Morocco who have given themselves go here to the delight of our taste buds! No real restaurant room, however, it's very advantageously replaced by a very pleasant terrace at the back of the pavilion. It allows to enjoy the excellent food, the shade of parasols and enjoy the view to the huge garden of the Morocco Pavilion, which will be our last stop here.

Indeed, a wide space of Morocco's plot was reserved for the realization of a rich and beautiful garden, gathering many plants and flowers of Morocco, in a maze of small paths... a very pleasant walk in an amazing landscape, the one of Expo Milano 2015.

One last word, that should pretty much sum up the visit of the flag of the Kingdom of Morocco: an enchanting visit, a change of scenery and a perfect immersion in the flavors of Morocco ... so thank you to Moroccan Pavilion, for making us vibrate, during the time of a visit ... which will remain engraved in our memories!
