Pavilions of Expo 2015 Milano : BELGIUM

Today is the National Day in Belgium, let's celebrate the Belgian Pavilion at the Expo 2015 Milan... and make a short visit.

Before to start, I would like clarify that I was completely conquered by this Pavilion, as nice as the Belgian themselves, with all the positive aspects that it involves... a visit full of charm and friendliness!

Externally, the architecture (Patrick Génard and associates), invites us to discover this pavilion... an entry, such a Belgian farm, invites us to push the door, wood is everywhere, sign of tradition but above all of sustainabilty... and glass, where each plate contains solar panels, and a wind turbine placed outdoors, providing almost electrical autonomy at the Pavilion!
Let's go...

We are immediately greeted by members of the team of the Pavilion, nice and smiling... they invite us to discover this Pavilion, they really seem to be proud of it. Quite rightly, as we can see it.
The three regions of the Belgium are represented: Wallonia, Flanders and Brussels.

Before descending into the bowels of the Pavilion, we do the tour of this kind of halle, or rather farm, to learn a little more about food, and the themes put forward by the Belgium Pavilion: agriculture, gastronomy, food security, science, etc... and a passage by the workshop of chocolate, topped with a huge pod of cocoa, which does not fail to interest all greedy.

Let us not forget to mention this historical wink, a model of the Atomium of Expo'58 in Brussels, history recall that the Belgium always participated in the Universal Expositions, and host many of famous ones, including the latest, in 1958, with its also known symbol than the Eiffel Tower.

This quick informative tour finished, we find ourselves before this dark ramp that descends under the pavilion... clearly, the Pavilion offers us to discover what will be the food of tomorrow, how the growing, as well as new food... This is the "cave" of the Pavilion, which offers many innovations.

We are immediately attracted by big 'machines'... in the lower part, a kind of aquarium, filled of Tilapia fishes, topped with a rotating drum which rotates very slowly, planted basil, and enlightened by led "solar"... it's the aquapony, a plant cultivation in perfect symbiosis with fish farming, where plantations are naturally fertilized by their droppings.

Hydroponics is also shown, in particular with culture of aromatic herbs on long rails, to optimize planting surfaces. Note that the entire production of this "cave" is used in the pavilion restaurant ... 100% Bio!

Many other alternative nutritions are proposed here, like ancient wild plants, the consumption of protein-rich insects, or innovative products such as Permafungi project, which, with a kit, to produce its own mushrooms, with a fertilizer made from coffee grounds. There's really something for everyone at this great pavilion of Belgium.

Then, a circular staircase invites us to go upstairs ... and we can find the third part of the pavilion, and festive and joyful Belgium. The shop, of course, propose the famous Belgian chocolates - how can you resist? - And the cozy brasserie with its rich sample of Belgian beers, all tastier than each other!

After strolling and enjoyed in this very welcoming space, we come out of the pavilion, whose exterior is just as friendly. A sort of esplanade made of wooden bleachers, allows you to relax and to eat ... Belgian specialties, beer, waffles and fries, among others... This area also hosts events and shows organized by the pavilion.

In summary, the pavilion of Belgium is one of the essential places of Expo ... again, Belgium makes figure of "good student" of the Expos, offering a magnificent pavilion, fun, and environmentally responsible. It respects both the theme and plays the game by offering solutions for the future ... a big applause to the pavilion of Belgium for offering us such a nice showcase, and thank you for the lovely welcome!

History - Liege, Belgium... and Expos...

Since a few days, the Belgian pavilion is "online" on the many social networks... wesbite, facebook, twitter, and so...

Belgium must be proud to be one of the countries which have organised the most Expos, in many of its important cities... like Brussels, Antwerpen, Gent, Charleroi, ... and Liege...

In Liege, three important Expos were held... in 1905, 1930 and 1939...

The first in 1905, a World Expo, for the 75th anniversary of Belgium independence.
In 1930 was organized on the occasion of the Belgium centennial anniversary an International Expo, simultaneously with the City of Antwerp.
The latest was another international expo, the "Exposition of Water in 1939", on the Coronmeuse's site.

Discover together, and images and video, these three exhibitions.

Belgium pavilion, by Patrick Genard and associates...

An impressive "farm" of wood, glass geode, statues in chocolate out of scale, beer bottles that are taken for stained glass ... The quirky Belgian spirit will be present.

In a few months, it's a whole Belgium, picked up on 2717 m2, which will take shape on the site of the World Expo 2015 in Milan.
The man who will take up this challenge is Patrick Genard architect engineer with very deep roots Namur and implemented for over thirty years in Barcelona. "This selection was the first challenge," summarizes the most Flawinnois Catalans.
"It has been very much detail in the choice of partners. And it will serve us all is to be built ... by April 1 "For the Expo, it starts on May 1.. Until October 31, the longer you wait to twenty million visitors.

The set point is clear: the showcase effect must bring to bear. It is also an opportunity to remind the world that our kingdom is not limited only to mussels and fries. Or even Stromae ...

Yet food, it will be much issue with the theme 2015: "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life".
"To design the pavilion, it was also surrounded by specialists in these issues, such as Eric Haubruge, (note: the Vice-President of Agricultural Faculty of Liège-Gembloux)," says Patrick Genard "It is. exciting. At the expo, we will discover how the population can be fed in 2050: insects, algae culture, aquaponics ... "

Educate, that is the purpose of this expo. But also charm. The seduction process, it will start with architectural aesthetics. The impressive wood frame of the "Belgian farm," a glass as half a geode egg fifteen meters high, a "DNA" staircase ...
On paper, it does not lack pace. "It highlights materials and expertise closely related to our country: wood and glass." A world first should even be presented in Milan: photovoltaic panels for a new generation.

Charm, it also involves a chip stand and another waffle ideal to entice the customer, at the entrance of the pavilion. In the evening, techno music should even agree on the site of the Belgium miniature history to recall that the New Beat was not just an accident of history ...

Seduction must also act on Italian visitors, a large majority for this Expo 2015. "There will thus be a nod to many Belgians with Italian roots: Queen Paola, Adamo, Rocco Granata ..."

Effectiveness of the North and Latin charm ... Patrick Genard knows by heart the chemical formula of Belgium. Winning formula? Answer in spring 2015, when the Milanese nightingale will start to sing.

Belgium at Expo 2015 Milano...

Theme "Our Food, Our World – Produce Responsibly, Consume Smartly"

The Concept

Balance between man and nature, food production and consumption, is the inspiration for Belgium’s 2,717-square meter pavilion.

For centuries, food production has been one of Mankind’s activities, shaping the world we live in today, and influencing people and certain parts of society. On the other hand, food consumption has been strongly linked to human activity and nature, its habits, deeply rooted in the culture and religion of a society and reflecting people’s lifestyles. Globally, they also have a strong impact on nature, politics, society and landscape.

At Expo Milano 2015 Belgium looks to present the innovations, technologies and best practices that allow it to produce food in a responsible way, and to educate people to be responsible consumers. It will showcase and share a range of scientific and technological competences in the research and development of food and energy, stimulating a conversation on achieving the right balance between man and nature.
