About the Greek pavilion ?

Theme “Greek Food: Sharing the Flavors of Health”
The Concept

The theme "Greek Food: Sharing the Flavors of Health" is based on the inherent wisdom of the Greek diet as a universal standard for the production and consumption of food products which are affordable and delicious, that have stood the test of time, and above all, promote physical, emotional, community and environmental health.

The main doctrines of Greek food easily relate to the Expo’s main theme, Feeding the Planet - Energy For Life, with Greek cuisine being known for its endless range of plant-based dishes and for recipes that vary depending on the season and region. With so much adulteration in food production in industrialized western societies, Greece stands out: Greek food is still pure and unprocessed. Food-related issues which burden western societies, such as obesity, allergies and gluten intolerance, can be largely overcome by the adoption of the Greek diet. The Greek diet combines two seemingly contradictory elements: indulgence and health. It is a diet of inclusion, not abstinence. It is a diet that embraces the joy of life.

These are the messages that the Greek pavilion of Expo Milano 2015 communicates. The interactive pavilion informs the public about the purity, nutritional value, tradition and effectiveness of Greek products and businesses. Through the use of technology combined with an artistic, visual approach and the use of traditional objects, the pavilion will feature visual and sound installations and interactive installations. There will also be a botanical garden and the opportunity to purchase Greek products.

Bio-Mediterraneum: Health, Beauty and Harmony

The concept of this Cluster is based upon the Mediterranean cuisine and the way of life in this area, which is centered on participation and integration. The atmosphere in this Cluster aims to recreate the colors, tastes and aromas that are typical of the Mediterranean countries and cultures. Regione Siciliana is Official Partner of Expo Milano 2015 for the Bio-Mediterraneum Cluster. With the image of a typical Mediterranean town in mind, this Cluster was built with a large main central square from which four main structures stand proud, allowing the visitor to purchase and sample products and foods from this part of the world. The floor within the main square is made up of various shades of blue, giving the visitor the impression of the Mediterranean sea.

Bio-Mediterraneum Cluster... and Sicily

Food, Tradition, Mediterranean Diet: Sicily to Manage the Bio-Mediterraneum Cluster...

September 17, 2014, an agreement was signed between the Sicily Region and Expo Milano 2015 whereby the Region will coordinate the activities of the shared areas of the Bio-Mediterraneum Cluster and will organize the calendar of events for the six-month duration of the event. The signing was attended by Ezechia Paolo Reale, Councillor of Agriculture for the Sicily Region; Stefano Gatti, Manager of the Clusters project for Expo Milano 2015; and Dario Cartabellotta, Manager of the Bio-Mediterraneum Cluster for the Sicily Region and General Manager of the Department of Fisheries for the Sicily Region.

To date, this is the only Cluster to be led by a public institution: the dining area, exhibitions and the program of events within the shared area of the Bio-Mediterraneum Cluster will be managed by the Sicily Region which will also have the role of coordinating contributions by Participating Countries in the shared area.

Taking on this role "Sicily will offer visitors a showcase of the biodiversity of the Mediterranean with its products based on the core activities of fishing and agriculture. We are proud to contribute our ideas to an event that will act as a bridge between cultures, "said Ezechia Paolo Reale, adding that "the Mediterranean culture is the bearer of alternative and original values compared with those that have led society so far."

Sicily will share with visitors of Expo Milano 2015 and with Participating Countries their knowledge of Mediterranean foods: "from olive oil to tomatoes, and cous cous, Sicily can claim an excellence in food and products that epitomizes the DNA of the Mediterranean diet," said Stefano Gatti.

Dario Cartabellotta highlighted the contribution of cultural wealth that Sicily will bring to the Cluster "Unesco has also recognized the Mediterranean diet as a World Heritage Site. Biodiversity, and also an abundance of tradition and food culture, are a feature of Sicily, the result of two thousand years of history and synthesis. The influence of Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Normans, Arabs, Byzantines, Spaniards, and up to Piedmont: the history of Sicily is that of an encounter and continuous exchange of cultures."

It is in the spirit of encounter and exchange that the partnership has been signed: through culture, food and traditions, Sicily will lead a process of partnership among the Countries of the Mediterranean and among all the Participating Countries. The Cluster comprises, besides Sicily, Montenegro, Algeria, Serbia, Lebanon, Egypt, San Marino, Tunisia, Greece, Libya, Malta and Albania.
