Architecture of Lithuanian pavilion at Expo 2015 Milano

Architecture... pavilion of Lithuania

Pavilion designers – a blend of experience and youthful drive

Organisers of the competition to design a Lithuanian pavilion at the EXPO 2015 world exhibition received a record-breaking number of offers with as many as 27 conceptual designs submitted.

The designs were evaluated by a panel which, apart from representatives of the competition organiser, the Ministry of Environment, included the chair of the Lithuanian Architects Association, Gintautas Blažiūnas, dean of the Architecture Faculty of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Rimantas Buivydas, architects Rolandas Palekas and Marius Šaliamoras, ethnologist and professor at the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences, Libertas Klimka, Italy-based journalist Paulius Jurkevičius as well as TV show host and author of the book “Pasimatymas su Lietuva” (“A Rendezvous with Lithuania”), Edita Mildažytė. Public discussions on the competition entries were held in Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai and Vilnius and they were available on the web.

The project named “Balance” from a Kaunas-based architecture studio, JAS, was acknowledged the best. The panel was impressed by their originally balanced bi-volumetric composition which allowed introducing Lithuania as a country of unique tradition and technological innovation. A group of young architects directed by a highly experienced architect Virginijus Juozaitis then worked out the pavilion’s technical design.

An Italian company, WOA (directed by Saulius Gecas), is in charge of coordinating technical documentation with the Italian authorities, drafting of working drawings and overseeing of the pavilion’s construction process. Construction is carried out by an Italian construction firm selected through a public procurement procedure, Bodino Engineering, which, as a matter of fact, is also building pavilions of impressive architecture for an international real estate corporation, Vanke, (designed by a world-famous Daniel Lebeskind studio) and China at EXPO 2015. Of the approximately 20 entrants, organisers of Lithuania’s introduction at EXPO 2015 were satisfied with the conditions and qualification of Bodino Engineering the most.
