History - Netherlands pavilion at Expo 1939 Liège - Belgium

The Exposition of Water... at Liège - Belgium, in 1939 !

The Netherlands pavilion

Much of its territory is the result of a patient conquest of the sea and the waters, the Netherlands had to participate in beautifully to the Expositon of Water.

The large pavilion of this nation to the edge of the Meuse is every bit worthy of praise.

The exterior decorations already invite us to acknowledge the maritime power of the Netherlands. These are two large world maps retracing, one, the great voyages of discovery made by Dutch navigators and the other, the main Dutch waterways.

Inside the pavilion, the interest revolves around a large model of the waterways of the Netherlands, led by small boats powered by electricity, with the schematic representation of ports, industrial centers, airfields, lighthouses and lightships.

Documentation regarding the drainage work of Zuijderzee naturally occupies an important place, and everything related to the Ministry of Waterstaat, the most important department of the Dutch government.

On the upper floor, a large place is reserved Headlights Department under the Ministry of National Defense.

Other stands will inform the visitor usefully on trade and tourism opportunities in cities such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam, countries such as the Dutch Limburg.

Dutch Festival at Expo 2015 Milano...

For centuries the Dutch have come up with solutions for issues around food, water and energy and we do this in our own particular way: Share Grow Live. This story is told at the pavilion through a central exhibition and temporary shows about, among others the future of fruits and vegetables, new ways of producing food and the relationship between food and technology. Food art and artificial food aren’t forgotten either.

Each day will see tastings, demonstrations, workshops and performances so that a true festival atmosphere will emerge. And of course there are many great things to eat, ranging from Dutch classics like “bitterballs” and “stroopwafels” to exciting new dishes. The greenhouse restaurant, food trucks and the Ferris wheel cater to all tastes.

Kids will enjoy treasure hunts, workshops and other fun things.

Seminars, lectures, meet and greets and other activities will ensure business visitors will spend their time at the pavilion in a pleasant and useful way.

Theme “Share, Grow, Live”

Concept

One of mankind’s most fundamental objectives is to improve our quality of life. Whether it’s financial or sociocultural well-being, it leads to huge local and global achallenges. These are diverse and interconnected. In order to sustain future life solutions need to be found.

Share. Ultimately the search for solutions to global challenges requires international collaboration  and the sharing of knowledge and natural recources. We have to do it together. The Dutch are used to cooperating, it’s part of our nature.

Our geography – the Dutch Delta, the water that surrounds us has always demanded this. Our country has always needed new and creative solutions which could only be developed and implemented successfully by working together. Solutions for, among many others, land reclamation, crop improvements and water management have all been created in this fashion.

Grow. In addition, The Netherlands have proven to be fertile ground for growth and knpwledge development because of our Delta, but also because of our unique decentral, democratic and socially conscious society, leading to a long history of international food production, innovative agriculture and the equitable distribution of land, water and other resources. Population-wise: the Netherlands are number 63 in the world and our land area is 134th. Yet we are the second largest global food exporter and many Dutch companies and knowledge institutions are global leaders in various food-related fields. They play an important role in finding solutiuons for worldwide challenges such as food security, food safety and the sustainable use of water, energy and other resources.

Live. More and more people, in search of ever higher qualities of life: this requires many solutions.
Share, develop, grow, live: it’s the Dutch way. We are eager to discuss how this works and how, together with the rest of the world we can improve our lives even further. Welcome!

This morning, the Kingdom of the Netherlands signed the contract of participation in Expo Milano 2015. The document was signed by the Dutch Commissioner General Erik van der Schaft and Commissioner of the Government of Italy for Expo Milano 2015 Giuseppe Sala. The ceremony was held as part of the College of Commissioners General, the meeting with the representatives of the States that will take part in the Universal Exposition, and was held today in Parma.

"Share, Grow, Live"

The Pavilion of the Netherlands, located on an area of over 2,300 square meters, will develop the Theme Statement "Share, Grow, Live." The Dutch participation at the Universal Exposition will be guided by three principles, namely "Share", because the issues related to food are local as well as global; "Grow", because the food is a topic to be addressed also from a social and economic point of view; "Live", because such awareness must inspire action and allow wellbeing for all. The Pavilion of the Netherlands will communicate these issues in a mix of interactivity, entertainment and education. The area will include tents, a Ferris wheel and open modular structures that will help to create a pleasant atmosphere of  an amusement park. In addition, thanks to permanent and temporary exhibitions, where children, teens and adults will be immersed in a festive atmosphere, discovering the history and developments of Dutch technological research into nutrition. The signing of the participation of the Netherlands, a few months before the opening of the Universal Exposition of 2015, is further confirmation of the strategic role that the nations of the world recognize in the event and the importance of the challenges raised by the theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life".
