About the Palestine pavilion...

Theme "Old as Olive Tree, Young as Olive Fruit"

The Concept

Palestine has a rich history and culture that is represented by the country’s relationship with the olive tree.

The olive tree’s draught resistance and ability to grow under poor soil conditions, bearing fruit for thousands of years embodies the palestian history.

From the olive branch’s recognition as a historical symbol of peace to its modern day significance, the olive tree serves as a powerful symbol for Palestine.

In addition to their symbolic meaning, olive trees are a main source of income for the Palestinians, they account for 70% of the country’s fruit production and contribute approximately 14% to their economy. Palestinian olives are now reaching markets worldwide.

Olive oil has recently gained prominence in the world as an important part of a healthy diet. This reenforced the status of Palestinian Olive oil internationally, as it is considered one of the most prominent in the world both in nutritional value and in taste.

Olive oil is a basic component of the daily meals of Palestinians. Every morning families gather around the traditional breakfast of zait and zaatar- olive oil and ground thyme – served with fresh kmaj - pita bread.

Palestine invites Expo Milano 2015 visitors to their Pavilion, located in the Arid Zones Cluster.

Its elements reflect the tradition, hospitality and culture of Palestine.

Visitors can view photo and multimedia exhibitions that represent the Palestinian people's attachment to the land and can learn about traditional water conservation methods.

They can also purchase food and handicrafts, view cooking demonstrations and participate in a variety of activities, including the tasting of Palestinian Saj and Taboun bread, and pastries with olive oil prepared by Palestinian chefs.

Theme "Science and Technology at the Service of Food Security and Quality"

The Republic of Congo takes part in the next Universal Exposition with the theme "Science and Technology in the Service of Safety and Food Quality".

The country’s pavilion is located within the Cereals and Tubers Cluster as an important producer of these foods. During the six months of the Exposition, the Republic of Congo shows visitors its scientific innovations and techniques pertaining to the production, treatment, processing and storage of these cultivated products, while presenting the potential for food safety in the African country, which include not only innovations in the food supply chain, but also education on proper nutrition and leading a healthy lifestyle.

The Republic of Congo has long been known for its agriculture, producing cassava, corn, rice and yams, a tuber grown in equatorial regions of the planet and used for its starch. The country’s participation in Expo Milano 2015 aims to raise awareness among visitors about the importance of the presence of tubers and cereals in the diet as a source of complex carbohydrates and also to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences among Congolese researchers and those from other participating countries.

Sierra Leone at Expo 2015 Milano... Rice Cluster

Pic courtesy Sierra Leone pavilion.

Theme "Food Security – A Means to the Agenda for Prosperity"

The Concept

The West African state of Sierra Leone is an area of potentially arable land that extends over millions of hectares, of which only 10% is actually cultivated at present.

Rice is the dominant crop of the country, with an annual per capita consumption of about 104 kg, which is among the highest in Sub-Saharan Africa. Rice is cultivated both in the high plains and in other ecological regions, sometimes even with rudimentary techniques. However, efforts to increase production have improved the country’s level of self-sufficiency from 57.45% in 2002, to 71% in 2007.

The promotion of national rice production is a key strategy for improving food security, stimulating economic growth and increasing household income.

Eradicating hunger, thirst and malnutrition is one of the objectives of Expo Milano 2015. To support its implementation, the government of Sierra Leone is committed to producing a balanced diet from a nutritional standpoint, to assessing the effectiveness of the typical model of agriculture in its villages, and to ensuring that sources for human subsistence (soil and water) are protected. This goal is the inspiration for its participation, with an exhibition space of 125 square meters within the Rice Cluster.

Sierra Leone offers visitors the full experience of a "smart farm," a place where the skills of various individuals meet to reach a common goal. The "smart farm" practices rice cultivation, sustainable fishing, and raising chickens and small livestock; there are centers for health and nutritional education, schools, markets, irrigation and energy-production systems. One of its objectives is to study this economic model with an Italian research institution.

Some pics from Romania's pavilion

Thanks to Romania's pavilion Facebook page.

Beautiful light in the Romanian Pavilion this morning...

President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, received from Romania's pavilion general commissioner, Georgian Ghervasie, a piece of wood - the same wood the Pavilion was built from - engraved with the pavilion logo

In pavilion's garden visitors can find parsley and lovage, two of the most popular herbs used in the Romanian kitchen.

Pavilion's cook Cristi picking up thyme from our rooftop garden for menu of the day.
When entering the Romanian Pavilion, you will notice a huge pan flute, a musical instrument whose sound you can discover on the soundtrack of Romania's pavilion.

Looks like a beautiful day in Milan for a visit at Expo2015 to discover the Romanian Pavilion.

A blend of tradition and modernity, Romanian Pavilion shows Romania's understanding of sustainability concerning the food, said President of România, Klaus Iohannis, while visiting Expo Milano, May 14.
