Turkmenistan pavilion at Expo 2015 Milano

Theme “Water is life

The Concept

Turkmenistan is the birthplace of the ancient civilizations that left a legacy of unique cultural heritage to humanity. This region was called the “crossroads of the seven roads of the world” because it was crossed by the Great Silk Road. In this tradition, Turkmenistan is very rich in natural, biological and cultural resources. Actually Turkmenistan is one of the worlds fastest economically growing nations and in recent years has developed a large investment program in its infrastructure and its agriculture production. In the production of food, the future focus is on sustainability, environmental conservation and water consumption. The world famous melons named “Waharman” of Turkmenistan are a one agricultural export product in addition to other products in the food industry.

The Pavilion Design
The Pavilion displays traditional as well as modern symbols of Turkmenistan. At the entrance of the white pavilion, there is a water fountain with a horses head of the oldest known horse breed in the world, the “Ahal-Tekke horse”. Over the main entrance there is a wooden structure of a traditional Turkmen yurt and a large LED carpet which offers a glimpse of the most beautiful hand-made turkmen carpets. The three drops of water at the entrance and the large LED water drops measuring approximately 250sqm on the side of the pavilion with the long waterfall behind it are certain to invite visitors to take some memorable photos. Inside the solid construction, following the example of the white capital Ashgabat, three exciting levels are waiting to be explored. There, you will find the theme of quality food production, biodiversity and health, even huge hand made carpets, a water feature with projection, a 5D cinema and a genuine traditional yurt on the rooftop. The restaurant on the ground floor and the cafe on the rooftop will invite visitors to taste and feast on traditional Turkmen dishes.

History - First participation of UAE in Expos... Abu Dhabi at Expo'70 Osaka

Abu Dhabi pavilion - Osaka 70 - Expo 2020 Dubai Blog

A friend asked me the question some time ago: "what about United Arab Emirates in the Expos? Since when and how many participations?"

It's a fact that the United Arab Emirates, young federal state was created in 1971, only 41 years ago ... it's perfectly normal that this story related to Expos is also recent.

Abu Dhabi pavilion - Osaka 70 - Expo 2020 Dubai BlogSince the Expo '70 in Osaka until 2012 Yeosu, there can be 15 different Expos ... regarding the participation of the Emirates, the first one was in Japan, Osaka, in 1970, thanks to the presence of the pavilion of Abu Dhabi, federal capital of the country, composed by seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Sharjah, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Umm al Qaiwain.

Abu Dhabi pavilion - Osaka 70 - Expo 2020 Dubai BlogThis first participation will be followed by five others with the United Arab Emirates: Seville in 1992, in Hanover in 2000 in Zaragoza in 2008, Shanghai in 2010 and Yeosu in 2012.

There are 6 entries since the creation of the UAE 41 years ago, but since Expo '70, if we take it into account all interests of countries that are parties of the Arab world, there is a total of 80 entries, which is far from negligible in just four decades.
Not to mention the Arab countries involved since the first expos: Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, etc ...

Abu Dhabi pavilion - Osaka 70 - Expo 2020 Dubai BlogBack on this first participation in Japan, of the Abu Dhabi pavilion :

Abu Dhabi pavilion is a reconstruction of simple fortresses but impressive that coast in the ancient times. These fortresses served as residence or as gathering places of worship for the sheikhs or tribal leaders. Although built with simplicity, some survived the combined assault of man and nature.

Abu Dhabi pavilion - Osaka 70 - Expo 2020 Dubai BlogThey are still silent but eloquent witnesses of the Arab tenacity.

The pavilion is distinguished by its minarets, one round and one square, and includes exhibition halls and cinema.

Abu Dhabi pavilion - Osaka 70 - Expo 2020 Dubai BlogThe country and its people are presented with films and objects presented in alcoves around the main minaret. Under the theme "Abu Dhabi, Past, Present and Future", this pavilion offers a broad overview of the activities and achievements of the small emirate.

The exhibition gives an idea of the enormous amount of work and considerable progress made since the beginning of the reign of His Highness, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nehiyan and how oil revenues are used for the well-being of the people.

Abu Dhabi's past, the role of the sea and pearl fishing in the lives of people is treated with picturesque paintings.

Highlight of the exhibition: a replica of a romantic scene of the "Thousand and One Nights" to entertain visitors to the manner of the Arabs in the past centuries.

The pavilion of Abu Dhabi was at the center of the Expo '70 in Osaka, besire the artificial lake near Avenue Bridge Senri.

History - Republic of Korea at New York World's Fair 1964/1965

Korea in New-York 1964-1965

An Oriental teahouse, with traditional peaked wooden roof, is linked with a concrete pavilion of free-flowing contemporary lines, linking the Korea of yesterday and today.
Within the pavilion, ancient art and folk dances are on view along with products for sale from South Korea's rebuilt industries.
In the teahouse, waitresses in flowing silk robes serve delicacies from the nation's 2000 year old cuisine.

Highlights :

A sculptered welcome. Above the entrance to the area is a contemporary wood sculpture suggesting old Koeran calligraphy. Inside the main building, grasscloth, silk and other fabrics from modern Korea hangfrom the curved walls among paintings, carvings and ornamental screens many centuries old.
Handicrafts on sale include dolls in native dress, brass and lacquer ware and embroidered silks. Guides also take orders for 800 listed product.

Dancing drummer girls. In a harpershaped auditorium, costumed entertainers offer folk dances; in one traditional favorite, girls sing and dance while tapping on drums slung from thier shoulders. Also in the auditorium, films and slides show life in contemporary Korea.

Tower of treasures. Standing in between the two buildings is a replica of the Tabo Pagoda, or Tower of Many Treasures. Built in Kyongju, Korea's capital during its Golden Age, the Sixth Century pagoda is considered a masterpiece of Oriental carved stonemasonry.

Restaurant. The teahouse serves individual dishes or complete meals. One of the specialties is Kimchi, a mixture of spiced and pickled vegetables which has been seasoned underground in huge jars.

History - Monaco pavilion at Expo 1873 Vienna

Monaco pavilion in Austria
Universal Exposition of Vienna in 1873

Since all major countries are represented at the Vienna Exposition, the state of Monaco could not fail this important appointment. In reality, the Principality of His Serene Highness Charles III (Honore-Grimaldi) does not contain the twentieth part of the population of Vienna, but it’s an independent state, richly endowed by the nature and capable of representing a fairly active industry. The results of this industry are grouped in the pavilion which we publish the engraving, and they testify to visitors of the work and efforts of this small country. Lemons, oranges, carob beans, olives are the main products of Monaco; which also makes braids for straw hats, and has distilleries highly valued species.

MSC Cruises has been named Official Cruise Carrier of Expo Milano 2015

“Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” theme makes MSC Cruises an ideal partner

Geneva, 11 February 2015 – MSC Cruises has been named Official Cruise Carrier of Expo Milano 2015, the Universal Exposition that since 1851 has celebrated human achievement and debated the big questions facing humanity.

Under the partnership, MSC Cruises, the market leader in the Mediterranean, South Africa and Brazil, will proudly display the Expo Milano 2015 logo on the hull of MSC Fantasia, which will sail in the Med throughout 2015.

MSC Cruises will also be an official vendor, so that guests can buy Expo tickets on board and attend the event by joining special shore excursions when calling at Genoa and La Spezia. Between May and October MSC Cruises will bring nearly 600,000 cruise passengers through these two ports alone.

This collaboration between MSC Cruises and Expo Milano 2015 will formally kick off at the Borsa Italiana del Turismo 2015 (BIT) tourism trade show, where MSC Cruises will have a presence on the Expo Milano 2015 stand.

This year’s Expo, in Milan from 1 May to 31 October, explores the issue of sustainability in food, under the slogan “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”.

MSC Cruises CEO Gianni Onorato said: "The theme of Expo Milano 2015 is a daily consideration in the way we behave and operate as a company. Food is central to every cruise, and we offer our guests a large variety of quality, culinary experiences that reflect food’s social and cultural importance. What is more, we work hard to do this in a responsible and sustainable way.”

He added: “Since 2009, MSC Cruises and UNICEF have partnered on the Get On Board for Children project, which addresses child hunger and malnutrition in developing countries and emergency situations. Since the partnership began our guests have donated more than €3 million to UNICEF.”

Expo 2015 CEO Giuseppe Sala said: “MSC Cruises creates dream holidays that centre on food, wine and the heritage of beautiful destinations. Similarly, Expo Milano 2015 seeks to offer an unforgettable experience through six months of rich and varied content, and scientific and technological offerings. This is why the pairing of Expo Milano 2015 and MSC Cruises is a natural one."

MSC Cruises will be present throughout the duration of the exhibition with a multimedia exhibition space focused on game-changing "Ships of the Future", which will be ready from 2017.

KIP International School pavilion...

Attractive territories for a sustainable world

Attractive territories for a sustainable world is the title of the KIP International School Pavilion. It means that to feed the planet, governments, businesses and associations need to invest, above all, in local development. They must invest in and give value to the territory where people live and work together so they can produce the healthy and appropriate food they need. The pavilion’s title also signifies that territories must be attractive, so that people will choose to live there because of the dynamism of the economy, the quality of services, the beauty of the natural environment, the richness of culture and history and, especially, because people can participate in choosing their development priorities, thanks to governments and local institutions that work effectively. The contribution of the KIP International School is thus of fundamental importance for developing the overall theme of Expo Milano 2015, given that present economic development trends, unfortunately, produce mass migration of people from rural areas to cities in search of better living conditions.

Encounters

In the KIP Pavilion, visitors will be able to meet those actors, from all five continents, who are engaged in taking forward high quality development processes and who will showcase their best and most innovative experiences. Special attention is reserved for actors from China who will illustrate the enormous creativity and social sensibility of many public, associative and private actors, a side of China that is not well known. Above all, visitors will find those actors that want to work together to build development processes and international partnerships that will continue beyond EXPO itself.

The programme

The programme will provide details of the expositions, meetings and events that will take place in the pavilion. Every day its cooking school will offer new tastes and its theatre new emotions. Meetings of major international networks are envisaged: territorial networks committed to sustainable development and organic agriculture through territorial pacts among producers, local government, health services, schools, universities and tourism operators; networks of the 60 Local Economic Development Agencies, active in 25 countries around the world, that are successfully fighting poverty and exclusion by encouraging a form of economic growth that valorizes local resources and produces widespread wellbeing; the network of international development cooperation experiences that are going beyond old models of aid in favour of south-north and south-south partnerships and exchanges based on reciprocal interest, respect for different cultures and people’s active participation; the network of inclusive cities that was born during the Seventh World Urban Forum in 2014.

Main themes

Two principal themes link all the activities of the Pavilion. One is the relationship between production, distribution and consumption of food and the more general question of territorial development. The other is innovation, not just technological innovation, but also organizational and social innovation, new working methods, innovative business models and forms of financing and so on.

KIP International School

KIP International School (Knowledge, Innovations, Policies and Territorial Practices for the United Nations Millennium Platform) is an independent non-profit organization that collaborates with local, regional and national governments, international organizations, universities, research centres and other public and private organizations to promote knowledge, innovations, policies and practices that are coherent with the values of the United Nations Millennium Platform. It is the arrival point of many international experiences of human development cooperation led by the United Nations, that started with the Prodere Programme in Central America and extended to many countries in Africa, Latin America, the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe and Asia. Its head office is in Rome, at the FAO headquarters, with a scientific committee chaired by Edgar Morin and comprised of prestigious experts and intellectuals from universities and international organizations.

Main partner

Several public and private actors from many countries are supporting the KIP Pavilion. The main partner, however, is the Chinese Investment Xineng Technology and Development Company Ltd of Beijing, that has mobilized many actors that wish to participate in the project to illustrate their experiences and extend their international links.

The Pavilion project

The KIP Pavilion is conceived as a place for international encounters among institutions, associations, and private sector actors on issues related to sustainable local development. Its design evokes the idea of a World Village. Four elegant but simple buildings, inspired by antique rural villages, look out over a central square, the starting point for several pathways of expositions and meetings for its visitors. It is a reminder that rural villages are repositories of the natural and historical resources of a territory, with its local productive and food resources. The long access path from the Decumano accompanies the visitor through cultivated fields and the United Nations Garden, with its information panels on the future of food. All the materials used are natural and sustainable with a view to traditional rural constructions. Beyond spaces for meetings, expositions and events, there will be a 250-seat theatre and an area set up as an open kitchen for activities such as culinary demonstrations and cooking lessons. The Pavilion project is designed by RIMOND© in collaboration with architect Tony Marincola.

About the Greek pavilion ?

Theme “Greek Food: Sharing the Flavors of Health”
The Concept

The theme "Greek Food: Sharing the Flavors of Health" is based on the inherent wisdom of the Greek diet as a universal standard for the production and consumption of food products which are affordable and delicious, that have stood the test of time, and above all, promote physical, emotional, community and environmental health.

The main doctrines of Greek food easily relate to the Expo’s main theme, Feeding the Planet - Energy For Life, with Greek cuisine being known for its endless range of plant-based dishes and for recipes that vary depending on the season and region. With so much adulteration in food production in industrialized western societies, Greece stands out: Greek food is still pure and unprocessed. Food-related issues which burden western societies, such as obesity, allergies and gluten intolerance, can be largely overcome by the adoption of the Greek diet. The Greek diet combines two seemingly contradictory elements: indulgence and health. It is a diet of inclusion, not abstinence. It is a diet that embraces the joy of life.

These are the messages that the Greek pavilion of Expo Milano 2015 communicates. The interactive pavilion informs the public about the purity, nutritional value, tradition and effectiveness of Greek products and businesses. Through the use of technology combined with an artistic, visual approach and the use of traditional objects, the pavilion will feature visual and sound installations and interactive installations. There will also be a botanical garden and the opportunity to purchase Greek products.
