"Arts & Foods. Rituals since 1851"
"Arts & Foods. Rituals since 1851": The first pavilion of Expo Milano 2015 opens at the Milan Triennale...
April 9 to November 1, 2015
A journey through history, nostalgia and art: Arts & Foods. Rituals since 1851 brings us expressions of art that have interpreted the theme of food, eating and dining together, all things that unite us human beings.
With an area dedicated to art in the heart of the city which creates an extended experience of the Universal Exposition: "Arts & Foods. Rituals since 1851" is the first Expo Milano 2015 pavilion to open to the public. This major exhibition, curated by Germano Celant, takes place from April 9 to November 1 at the Milan Triennale and examines the relationship between the arts and the various rituals surrounding food from 1851 to today. The exhibition features design by Italo Rota with graphical design provided by Irma Boom.
Present during the press conference held on April 8 were Giuseppe Sala, CEO of Expo 2015 S.p.A. and Commissioner for Expo Milano 2015, Claudio De Albertis, President of the Triennale, Dario Franceschini, Minister of Heritage and Cultural Activities and Tourism, Filippo Del Corno, Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Milan, Arturo Dell’Acqua Bellavitis, President of the Design Museum Foundation, Silvana Annicchiarico, Director of the Triennale Design Museum, Germano Celant, curator of the exhibition. The conference was moderated by Roberto Arditti, Director of Institutional Affairs of Expo 2015 S.p.A.
Arts & Foods. Rituals since 1851: a journey through time, via food, art and the senses
The exhibition covers an area of about 7,000 square meters and features a plurality of visual language, models, objects and room-settings, which since 1851 have revolved around the world of food, nutrition, and dining together. Arts & Foods. Rituals since 1851 showcases more than 2,000 works and examines the relationship between art and the many rituals associated with eating, with special reference to how the esthetic and functional aspects of what we eat have impacted creative expression. Inside and outside the Milan Triennale there are also installations and works by contemporary artists created especially for the exhibition.
The exhibition route is both chronological and thematic: covering topics relating to food, its preparation, its distribution and the sharing of it, both in private and in public. On display are over 15 installations dedicated to places where food plays a central role - dining rooms, kitchens, bars, picnic areas - where paintings, furniture, objects, sculptures, household appliances, photographs, menus, books, and album covers create a impactful narrative.
The exhibition has a large sensory dimension thanks to the musical renditions and smelling stations, film and television screenings, quotes and more than 40 displays along the path highlighting important collectable objects and documents. Arts & Foods. Rituals since 1851 offers a journey through time and creatively develops the theme of Expo Milano 2015.
Germano Celant: an artistic jam session, embracing cultural history and nostalgia
Germano Celant, the curator of the exhibition, explains the inspiration for this project: "The idea was to start from 1851, the year of the first Universal Exhibition, which was held in London. The exhibition has been developed thematically around Expo Milano 2015, spanning a period of over 150 years with expressions and rituals that revolve around food and eating. Food has been depicted through music, literature, film, architecture, design, and photography. There are all the elements with which I describe this as an artistic 'jam session', creating an eclectic ensemble of images, materials, objects. You enter this exhibition and witness people’s lives, allowing visitors to step back in time, you can view the knives that our Grandmothers or Mothers once used, there's the kitchen that perhaps you remember having as a child. It also makes a leap back through the history of art, starting from the middle of the nineteenth century up until the present day.
Arts & Foods. Rituals since 1851: the part off-limits to adults
One of the strengths of the show is the route dedicated exclusively to children and teenagers who can experience a section that is "off-limits to adults." This is a section designed for maximum safety of the visitors and has as its theme, the relationship between the arts and food through toys, animation, comics, costumes and art designed specifically for children as well as a series of 93 works by Andy Warhol that are sure to be appreciated by younger visitors. "I thought of a small cultural Expo avatar, that can be appreciated by everyone, from grandparents to children”, explains Germano Celant. “There are areas that are “forbidden” to adults where only children can enter, but there are also areas where children may be kind enough to invite elder companions and let them see, for example, the 93 works by Andy Warhol".
Where, when, how much
The exhibition is open daily from 10:00 to 23:00 at the Milan Triennale. Admission is included in the ticket price of Expo Milano 2015 and also with the Triennale entrance ticket. The ticket price of Expo Milano 2015 also includes an entrance to the exhibition. The 2-day tickets for entrance to the Expo and the Expo season pass permit only a single entrance to the exhibition.

The Roadshow of Expo Milano 2015 begins in China. The first stop in Beijing starts with the opening ceremony which was held within the Expo "Sphere" exhibited on Wangfujing, one of the main avenues of the capital in the presence of about 200 guests.
The objective is to introduce the Universal Exhibition to the Chinese
"The Roadshow - said the CEO for Expo Milano 2015 Giuseppe Sala - is the strength of the 'China Special Project for Expo Milano 2015', presented at the beginning of 2013. The goal of this initiative is to raise awareness of the content and opportunities that the event in Milan offers to China and support the campaign for the sale of entrance tickets to the Universal Exhibition throughout the entire country. "
The meeting was attended by the Commissioner General of the Section of the Republic of China for Expo Milano 2015; Jinzhen Wang , the Deputy Mayor of Beijing; Cheng Hong, the Italian Ambassador to China; Alberto Bradanini , the Director of the National System for the Promotion of the Ministry Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Vincenzo De Luca , the CEO and commissioner of the Government for Expo Milano 2015 Giuseppe Sala and the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture of China (Department of International Cooperation)Tang Shenyao .
Expo Milano 2015 will play a positive role in cooperation between the two countries
"China and Italy have attached great importance to the Expo - said Wang -. During the ASEM summit, just concluded in Milan, the governments of both parties have issued a joint statement on a series of agreements reached, with an emphasis on the positive role that Expo 2015 plays in trade and economic cooperation between Italy and China, promoting communication between governments and the business community and facilitating collaboration between the two countries in various fields. China is the second largest economy in the world and a major agricultural country that has a historical food culture. Our country - he added - will engage in the challenge of achieving sustainable development throughout the world, using the Universal Exposition as a platform, of great importance for China to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with countries around the world. We will show that the results in agriculture, in food, urbanization and sustainable development are the challenges that we are facing; also telling the long history of the country, splendid culture, abundant and delicious food, as well as our commitment and expectations for future development. We hope to have the world better understand China, to share experiences with Italy and other countries and carry out exchanges in various fields thanks to the cooperation and participation in the Expo. "

Marcello Lippi
To provide support for the Universal Exposition is also Marcello Lippi , coach of the Italian National Football Team World Champion in 2006 and now coach of the Chinese team Guangzhou Evergrande. The theme at the center of Expo Milano 2015 deepens, then, the path opened by the Expo in Shanghai. You cannot, in fact, think about how to improve our cities and the way of life of citizens around the world without focusing on nutrition, proper diets and physical well-being. I am proud that Italy is hosting the Universal Exhibition - said the Italian coach -. It is as if, for six months, thanks to Expo Milano 2015 our country will be playing an important game every day. EXPONENDO. Before, After, Under, Over Expo Milano 2015
19 september 2014 to 30 april 2015...
Milan’s Museum of Science and Technology is until April 2015 hosting an exhibition on the history of Universal Expositions. "Exponendo" provides an overview of the Expositions of the past and a preview of Expo Milano 2015: a trip back in time through objects, interactive installations and movies.
A history of objects: before and after Expo Milano 2015
What do a Remington typewriter from 1890, a model of the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana in Rome and a basket for a hot air balloon from the beginning of the 20th century have in common? They are all objects from the Museum’s collections that help us better understand events on a given timeline: from London, 1851 to Paris, 1889; from the Exposition in Chicago, 1933 to the Brussels edition of 1958; passing by the great Exposition of Milan held in 1906 to which particular focus is given. The basket of the hot air balloon and an historical model of an elevated railroad built in Milan for the occasion, celebrate the grandeur of this historic edition and reveal the central theme of the Museum’s exhibition: technology.
A Smart Expo
Audiovisual and multimedia installations present a number of innovative and technological features of the event which will be held next year in Milan. At Expo Milano 2015, in fact, they are the focal point of an entire thematic area of "Exponendo". This engaging and entertaining experience for visitors is achieved through a series of mirrors which reproduce characters who "reflect" the theme Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life (a farmer, a rancher, a family that eats ...). The public can photograph themselves while interacting with outlines applied on mirrors ... and take home a souvenir from the future.
Over and under Expo Milano 2015
In the section on the Milan Exposition of 2015 are reflections on smart solutions designed for the Expo site, but also a preview of advanced technology systems used within the exhibition halls. Covering an area of twelve square meters are presented the "upper" part of the exhibition site, that is, the thematic routes, areas for events, green spaces and those designed for hosting services, and "lower" part, the site’s technological platform organized on five levels: Energy, Information Technology, Security, Edutainment and Services. Two videos help visitors in reading the themes of "sustainability" and "smartainability."

The ceremony was hosted by Mr. Zhao Zhenge, Deputy Secretary General of the Organizing Committee of China Pavilion and Deputy General Director of the Exhibition Department of CCPIT. About 200 guests attended the ceremony, including Mr. Wang Jinzhen, Chief delegate of China to the BIE, Commissioner General for China Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015 and Vice Chairman of CCPIT; Mr. Giuseppe Sala, Commissioner of the Government of Italy for Expo Milano 2015; Miss Liao Juhua, Consul General of the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Milano; Mr. Li Bin, Commercial Counselor of the Economic and Commercial Section of the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Milano; Miss Meng Wenhui, Executive Director of China Chamber of International Commerce, senior representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Italy and the Organizing Committee of Expo 2015 S.p.A.; the Chairman of selected construction companies for the China Pavilion (Unique Exhibition Co., Ltd., and Bodino Engineering S.r.l.) and the Chairman of Alessandro Rosso Group.
2015: The anniversary of the establishment of Chinese-Italian diplomatic relations
Speaking during the ceremony, Mr. Wang Jinzhen underlined that both the Chinese and Italian governments attach great importance to China’s participation at Milan Expo 2015 on the 45th anniversary of the establishment of China-Italy diplomatic relations that will take place in 2015. This year, on June 11,this year, the Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, in Beijing. They reached an important agreement that China and Italy would use Expo Milano 2015 as a great opportunity for a bilateral cooperation, which is also clearly articulated in a three-year action plan (2014-2016) issued by China and Italy to strengthen their economic partnership. He observed: "It is therefore meaningful for us to ensure China’s successful participation at the Expo as the tangible evidence of the consensus reached by our leaders. Currently, the design, as well as earthworks and foundations for the China Pavilion, have been successfully completed. Today, the opening ceremony of the surface construction for the China Pavilion officially marks its entry into a critical phase of comprehensive construction. We have every confidence that the construction unit of China Pavilion will fully satisfy with the project requirements for a scientific, rapid and high quality construction. We count on the ongoing support of the Organizing Committee of Expo Milano 2015.”
China is included among the countries that have invested heavily in Expo Milano 2015
Mr. Giuseppe Sala, Commissioner of the Government of Italy for Expo Milano 2015 and CEO of the Expo 2015 Company, delivered a speech on behalf of Italy: “China is proving to be one of Milan Universal Exposition’s key partners: we have already reached the target of 1 million tickets sold to Chinese operators and undoubtedly, with its three Pavilions, the Country is among those which has invested the most in our event. The projects which were presented and the interpretations of the Theme are very high profile and will offer visitors an edutainment experience rich in content and of extraordinary interest. I am sure that Expo Milano 2015 will be a unique opportunity to familiarize Italians and the rest of the world with the history, the thousand-year old traditions and innovations of this great Country. China can and wants to make a strategic contribution to the global challenge of sustainable development for the near future.”
Expo Milano 2015: the first time that China has participated in a Universal Exposition overseas
As we are all aware, it is the first time that China appears on the international stage of the Universal Exposition, with a large, self-built Pavilion of 4,590 square meters, second only to the Germany Pavilion. The design scheme of the China Pavilion is fully integrated with traditional Chinese architecture structures and forms, as well as modern design ideas, with a profile that is similar to “Wheat Waves” in a Land of Hope. Indeed, the theme of the China Pavilion is “Land of Hope, Food for Life.”

From 1851 to 2015, Italy in World Expos...

London, 1851, Milano 2015 These are the dates that circumscribe the story along almost two centuries, the Universal Exhibitions.
These major events have always been able to inspire a sense of wonder in visitors, thanks to the futuristic inventions and machinery displayed in the halls, entering in fact, on tiptoe, in the antechamber of the next era.
Italy has always been present in these important international meetings, bringing on the global spread the fruits of that creativity, that the world has always recognized.
But what it really means to host an Expo? What is the history of the Italian participation?
What legacies in the arts, urban planning, economic and, perhaps more importantly, as the visitor's personal legacy, in terms of momentum toward the future and the national sentiment?
A few months after the beginning of Expo 2015, we ask ourselves, in the third round of the Bracco Foundation meets on the history of Italian pavilions and the impacts that major events have on communities.
We spoke with Lucia Masina, a professor in the History of Art of the Academy of Fine Arts of L'Aquila, and Paul Dalla Sega, lecturer in Urban Enhancement and major events all 'Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan.

After Rimini and Ostia (on August 14 and 15), Riccione and Fregene (August 16 and 17), the Universal Exposition trucks will be in Emilia Romagna and Lazio from August 22 to 24: the next stops will be at Riccione, Milano Marittima, Cesenatico, Terracina, Sabaudia and Sperlonga.
Despite the wind and rain, the first weekend of the tour enjoyed a good turnout among citizens and tourists, drawn by the team of entertainers in selfies and quizzes to know more about next year’s Universal Exposition in Milan.
Those showing the most interest were between 35 and 45. Overall, the biggest attraction were the thematic routes being developed for the upcoming Universal Exposition: sustainable food, development of new technologies that bring improvements to the quality of life in the poorest countries, and nutritional education across various cultures around the Planet.

Energy Poverty: A Global Challenge 10 july 2014 - 10:00AM
Event...
"Energy Poverty and Energy Access: Global Challenges and Goals" is an event organized by the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei and the Fondazione Giangiacomo Feltrinelli within the Laboratorio Expo project. Tomorrow in Milan and throughout the day, the research community will enter into a dialogue with businesses and public sector organizations to understand and propose solutions for the question of "energy poverty."
According to data from the IEA (International Energy Agency), there are currently 1.26 billion people worldwide (about 20% of the total world population) with no access to electricity and 2.6 billion people (38% of the total world population) with no access to energy. They use traditional cooking methods using biomass-based energy, with serious health consequences as a result of indoor pollution. In 2012, the international community launched a campaign "Sustainable Energy for All," to ensure global access to modern energy services by 2030, improving the rate of renewable energy sources and promoting energy efficiency. Cooperation between research, private sector and the public sector is considered to be the key to achieving these goals.
The meeting tomorrow, at the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, aims to understand the impact of access to modern energy services on family welfare, the labor and business market, in addition to identifying the best ways for implementing effective policies and interventions with energy as a pre-requisite for the protection and promotion of human rights.
The workshop is divided into two main sessions. The first, centered on the concept of energy poverty, will include among its speakers, Hussain Samad from the World Bank, Stephen O'Connell of the City University of New York, and Jacopo Bonan of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. The second, entitled "Policy Making and Best Practices" will present measures already in place that aim to identify the most important challenges and possible solutions emerging from the cooperation among NGOs, international agencies and companies. Among its participants are Stefano Bologna of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and Andrea Poggio of Legambiente.

How Much Food do we Waste in our Homes? - Event !
Milan - Via Beltrame - Location of Expo Gate / 7 July
It often happens that we buy food, but then are not able to eat it, and end up throwing it in the trash. All because we do the weekly shop, and fresh produce expires; because we rely strictly on the expiry date on the label; because we want to taste everything, we buy, but then we do not eat. Or because we are attracted by the “3 for the price of 2” supermarket promotions that we are not able to consume.
On Monday, July 7 at 11.00 at Expo Gate, there will be a presentation of the 2014 Report on Household Food Waste produced by Waste Watchers, an observatory established by Last Minute Market with SWG. Andrea Segrè, president of Last Minute Market and Maurizio Pessato, president of SWG, will introduce the presentation attended by Maurizio Martina, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies, and Giuseppe Sala, Commissioner for Expo Milano 2015.
Waste is a cost to the environment, your wallet and to society.
The Report will illustrate the causes of waste and will indicate proposed actions to prevent and reduce it. With a broad array of statistics it analyzes the causes of waste in relation to income and the social status of Italian families, weaving into its findings the relationships between waste, lifestyles and eating habits. And it investigates the connections between food waste, values and views of citizens.
The 2013 report had already shown that every Italian family throws away between 200 grams and 2 kilograms of food every week and that every year Italian domestic waste represents a costs of €8.7 billion, about €7.06 per week per family.
The purpose of the report is to create awareness about the food and the environment in which we live. The initiative arose from a production and social research conducted by the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bologna, under the supervision of Professor Andrea Segre, and the experience of Last Minute Market is crucial in this context. Its focus is a last minute market that retrieves all the food that would otherwise be thrown in the trash for several reasons: because produce is about to expire or because it is damaged. Through this initiative, the food is recovered and donated to charitable organizations: a smart way to combine awareness, solidarity and sustainability.
