China pavilion at Expo 2015 Milano

Rejecting the typical notion of a cultural pavilion as an object in a plaza, the China Pavilion is instead conceived as a field of spaces.

Envisioned as a cloud hovering over a “land of hope”, the Pavilion is experienced as a series of public programs located beneath a floating roof, the unique design of which creates an iconic image for the project and a unique presence within the Expo grounds.

The theme for the China Pavilion is “The Land of Hope”.

The project embodies this through its undulating roof form, derived by merging the profile of a city skyline on the building’s north side with the profile of a landscape on the south side, expressing the idea that “hope” can be realized when city and nature exist in harmony. Conceived as a timber structure that references the “raised-beam” system found in traditional Chinese architecture, the Pavilion roof also uses modern technology to create long spans appropriate to the building’s public nature.

The roof is covered in shingled panels that reference traditional terra-cotta roof construction, but are reinterpreted as large bamboo leaves that enhance the roof profile while shading the public spaces below. Designed as layered screens, these panels add texture and depth to the Pavilion’s roof and create evocative light and transparency effects below.

Beneath the roof, the building’s ground plane is defined by a landscape of wheat (the “land of hope”) that references China’s agrarian past. This natural landscape transitions seamlessly into an LED multimedia installation in the center that forms the centerpiece of the building’s exhibition program.

The Pavilion’s full exhibition and cultural offerings are experienced as a sequence of spaces, beginning with an exterior waiting area in the landscape, leading to a themed exhibition space with interactive installations and cultural offerings from forty Chinese provinces. After this, visitors are guided up a gently sloped public stair to a panoramic viewing platform above the multimedia installation, after which they are guided into a multimedia space featuring a short film focusing on family reunions during China’s annual Spring Festival. This sequence concludes with visitors stepping outside the building onto a platform above the bamboo roof that enjoys expansive views of the Expo grounds.

The China Pavilion takes shape: the ceremony for the progress of work...

This morning, the grand opening ceremony of the surface construction for China Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015 was held at the worksite of the China Pavilion, at the center of   Decumano , the heart of the expo Expo site. The ceremony was hosted by Mr. Zhao Zhenge, Deputy Secretary General of the Organizing Committee of China Pavilion and Deputy General Director of the Exhibition Department of CCPIT. About 200 guests attended the ceremony, including Mr. Wang Jinzhen, Chief delegate of China to the BIE, Commissioner General for China Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015 and Vice Chairman of CCPIT; Mr. Giuseppe Sala, Commissioner of the Government of Italy for Expo Milano 2015; Miss Liao Juhua, Consul General of the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Milano; Mr. Li Bin, Commercial Counselor of the Economic and Commercial Section of the Consulate-General of the People's Republic of China in Milano; Miss Meng Wenhui, Executive Director of China Chamber of International Commerce, senior representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Italy and the Organizing Committee of Expo 2015 S.p.A.; the Chairman of selected construction companies for the China Pavilion (Unique Exhibition Co., Ltd., and Bodino Engineering S.r.l.) and the Chairman of Alessandro Rosso Group.

2015: The anniversary of the establishment of  Chinese-Italian diplomatic relations

Speaking during the ceremony, Mr. Wang Jinzhen underlined that both the Chinese and Italian governments attach great importance to China’s participation  at Milan Expo 2015 on the 45th anniversary of the establishment of China-Italy diplomatic relations that will take place in 2015. This year, on June 11,this year, the Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, in Beijing. They reached an important agreement that China and Italy would use Expo Milano 2015 as a great opportunity for a bilateral cooperation, which is also clearly articulated in a three-year action plan (2014-2016) issued by China and Italy to strengthen their economic partnership. He observed: "It is therefore meaningful for us to ensure China’s successful participation at the Expo as the tangible evidence of the consensus reached by our leaders. Currently, the design, as well as earthworks and foundations for the China Pavilion, have been successfully completed. Today, the opening ceremony of the surface construction for the China Pavilion officially marks its entry into a critical phase of comprehensive construction. We have every confidence that the construction unit of China Pavilion will fully satisfy with the project requirements for a scientific, rapid and high quality construction. We count on the ongoing support of the Organizing Committee of Expo Milano 2015.”

China is included among the countries that have invested heavily in Expo Milano 2015

Mr. Giuseppe Sala, Commissioner of the Government of Italy for Expo Milano 2015 and CEO of the Expo 2015 Company, delivered a speech on behalf of Italy: “China is proving to be one of Milan Universal Exposition’s key partners: we have already reached the target of 1 million tickets sold to Chinese operators and undoubtedly, with its three Pavilions, the Country is among those which has invested the most in our event. The projects which were presented and the interpretations of the Theme are very high profile and will offer visitors an edutainment experience rich in content and of extraordinary interest. I am sure that Expo Milano 2015 will be a unique opportunity to familiarize Italians and the rest of the world with the history, the thousand-year old traditions and innovations of this great Country. China can and wants to make a strategic contribution to the global challenge of sustainable development for the near future.”

Expo Milano 2015: the first time that China has participated in a Universal Exposition overseas

As we are all aware, it is the first time that China appears on the international stage of the Universal Exposition, with a large, self-built Pavilion of 4,590 square meters, second only to the Germany Pavilion. The design scheme of the China Pavilion is fully integrated with traditional Chinese architecture structures and forms, as well as modern design ideas, with a profile that is similar to “Wheat Waves” in a Land of Hope. Indeed, the theme of the China Pavilion is “Land of Hope, Food for Life.”

Vanke Unveils “Shitang” Designed by Architect Daniel Libeskind For Expo 2015 in Milan

Chinese real restate giant makes its overseas Expo debut
Milan, Italy–Studio Daniel Libeskind unveiled the design for the Vanke Pavilion for Milan Expo 2015. Mayor Giuliano Pisapia, and Liao Juhua, Consul General for China in Milan, join Vanke’s Chairman of the Board, Wang Shi and Expo Director Giuspeppe Sala at the Palazzo Marino to present the design for Vanke’s first overseas pavilion for Expo 2015.
Designed by world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind (New York/Milan/Zurich), the pavilion will explore key issues related to the Expo theme of “Feeding the Planet” by reimagining a traditional Chinese Shitang (dining hall). The interior exhibition design is lead by Ralph Appelbaum (New York/Beijing) and graphic design by Han Jiaying (Beijing).

“The staggering rate of the cities’ growth does in fact put us in the condition of having to face the risk of social disintegration, where the principal of solidarity slowly fades away and individuals, prey to anonymity, survive in a crescendo of solitude. This is why Vanke chose “Shitang” as the theme for its pavilion, a traditional Chinese social structure that lives on today in contemporary society under various forms, representing a possibility to socialize in a healthy, tranquil environment,” said Wang Shi, the Vanke chairman.

The concept for the pavilion was inspired by traditional Chinese landscape painting—rock formations, rice fields, and prehistoric outcrops. The pavilion aims to tell the story of civilization, technology and the 21st Century as well as offer a space for reflection and celebration of different cultures.
“For the Vanke Pavilion, I wanted to create a jewel—a place where people could gather, explore and experience something very Chinese and modern,” said Daniel Libeskind. “I drew from a spectrum of sources for the design—from the ancient writings of Confucius and Lao Zi to works from the Renaissance—with the goal of creating connections between many cultures,” adds Libeskind.

Situated on the edge of the Lake Arena, 1000-square meter pavilion appears to rise from the east forming a dynamic vertical landscape. The design features a sinuous geometrical pattern that flows between inside and outside. The red serpentine form carves an opening up the middle to a grand staircase clad in a white mosaic tile. A roof-top observation desk will provide stunning views of the lake and near-by Italian pavilion. The pavilion is clad in an innovative three-dimensional red metalized tile that Libeskind designed with the Italian company Casalgrande Padana, the geometric ceramic panels not only create an expressive pattern, but they possess highly sustainable self-cleaning and air purification properties.

Inside visitors encounter a constellation of more than 300 screens mounted on a matrix of bamboo armatures. Short films weave throughout the series of screens capturing a glimpse into the everyday life of ordinary Chinese citizens expressing the importance of the Shitang in their daily lives.
Each short film will loop at different intervals exploring the elements of Chinese culinary customs and everyday objects such as a cookbooks, table wear, and chopsticks. Chinese contemporary designer Han Jiaying gives these objects new life by rendering them in bold freehand brushstrokes and using folk handwriting to narrate the stories replayed in the films.
