Presentation of the "Work Package" for the Universal Exposition to Participating Countries

"There will be 15-16,000 people who will work on the Expo site, comprising the preparation and six months of the Exposition itself - said Giuseppe Sala, Commissioner for Expo Milano 2015, during a press conference where the labor agreements for Participating Countries were presented – 4,000 on the worksite, about 1,000 people working directly for Expo during the six months of the Exposition, 8,000 employees of companies linked to Expo and a further 3,000 managing the events led by the Countries.

"As a means of providing certainty over labor rights to foreign investors in the works, two agreements have therefore been signed with union representatives. In accordance with the provisions of the texts presented today, Participants, and their contractors may decide to sign a Framework Agreement for the construction phase of the Pavilions and a Framework Agreement for the operational phase of the event.

Four levels of possible action

"There are four levels of action to provide the necessary flexibility," continued Sala. There is the option of excluding the quantitative limits of fixed-term contracts (for recruitment in the construction phase) or at least the option of providing specific limits (for recruitment in the construction phase). Apprenticeships as incentives for youth employment are envisaged, along with organized working hours, rest periods, vacations, and permission for days off. Finally, a procedure has been introduced that can prevent or resolve disciplinary disputes of a contractual or labor nature, thus avoiding strike declarations.

The "work package" was presented to participating countries on July 23 and "I personally found an immediate demonstration of great satisfaction," Sala said during the press conference. "I thank the unions - said the Commissioner of Expo Milano 2015 - which have once again proved to be collaborative."

Attending were Minister Poletti, President Maroni, representatives of CGIL, CISL and UIL, and the City of Milan

"This is an important step - said Giuliano Poletti, Minister of Labor and Social Policy – it tells us that you can handle an extraordinary situation without suspending laws, but with good rules at the same time giving legal certainty. We did not move outside regulatory frameworks which demonstrates that the tools are there."

"Expo is a great opportunity and, also from the point of view of employment, must be fully leveraged for the best outcomes," said Roberto Maroni, President of the Lombardy Region.

"It's a unique agreement in its context - said Graziano Gorla, general secretary of the CGIL Milan - now the real challenge is to see how these agreements will be applied in the field." "We have shown that ordinary tools can be used for an extraordinary event," said the general secretary of CISL Milan, Danilo Galvagni. "We have been able to avert precarious approaches by applying national contracts," said Danilo Margaritella, secretary general of UIL Milan.

"A century-old cliché was overturned and we have shown that the unions are able to do their part when needed - said the deputy mayor of Milan Ada Lucia De Cesaris - The agreement for the Expo is a unique opportunity for agreement and can act as a lever to reverse current economic and employment conditions."

Manpower Group is Human Resources Partner

To help participants manage labor contracts, a Human Resources partner, Manpower Group, was identified through a public procedure, and it is already providing assistance to the Countries. "We provide our expertise to ensure that every new work project at Expo is clear and transparent," said Stefano Scabbio, president and Managing Director of Manpower Group Italia and Iberia.

To ensure that jobs created by Expo Milano 2015 do not end with the closure of the Exposition it is already thinking about the redeployment of workers who are and will be involved. For the representative of CISL "we need to understand how to manage post-Expo" from the employment point of view. "Workers will be employed as trainees and this will allow them to find new positions."

Malaysia... ready for Expo 2015 Milano...

For Malaysia Expo 2015 starts taking shape. The Asian Country received the lot in the exhibition site. In a space of about 2 thousand square metres, Malaysia will develop the theme of food sustainability for everyone and the path to achieve this goal.

Rice grain and seed : the Symbols of the Pavilion...
The pavilion takes shape from four wooden grains that will trace the path for visitors. The curved design represents the dynamism of the Nation and was inspired by the rice grain and the seed of the  Malay rain forest, which generate its varieties of plants. «They are a metaphor of the economic transformation of the Country – as can be read in a note of the Malay Department of Trade and Industry – starting from a form based especially on agriculture and food production oriented towards industrial exportation, which now reaches a service and industry society with a higher and higher added value».
Travelling through the seeds, visitor will discover Malaysia and its strategies for a sustainable and innovative development related to food and environment.

The Malaysian project team led by Datuk Dr.Wong Lai Sum, Deputy Commissioner General of the Malaysia Pavilion, signed and exchanged official Lot Acceptance Report document with Mr.Giuseppe Filiputti, Construction and Dismantling Division of Expo Milano 2015 at the Campo Base of the Expo Milano 2015

American Food 2.0: United to Feed the Planet... new video

The USA Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015 will highlight American industry, talent, products, ingenuity and entrepreneurship within the context of sustainability, nutrition and health, consumption, technology and innovation.

European Union pavilion... THE concept !

Growing Europe’s Future Together for a Better World

Concept

The title chosen by the European Union for its participation in Expo Milano 2015 aims to create an emotional connection between visitors and the Exhibition theme, demonstrating its commitment to building a Europe and a world that is ever more sustainable.

The European Union will explain how feeding the planet means so much more than just taking care of food. It means implementing a well functioning internal market and a multilateral trade system, and it means setting standards for food sanitation and promoting efficient logistics.

The European Union features in the various Thematic Routes planned for Expo Milano 2015. In the story of the history of mankind for example, one discovers grain, as an example of how food can unite people of different cultures. It is the same with the paradox between food abundance and scarcity – another Expo Milano 2015 theme that the EU considers as one of its objectives, just like eliminating hunger through its participation in development programs, while at the same time addressing the increasing obesity among its citizens. And there is the central role of research, looking for new and more sustainable ways to feed the world's population – which is rising steadily – with food that is safe and European.

In addition to embracing all the themes, the European Union, with its own dedicated Thematic Route, will involve the pavilions of all the member states, encouraging visitors to collect in each of these a different object, such as a seed or a token, that together form a personal collection that can then be assembled in the pavilion of the European Union.

The First Stone for the US pavilion...

Secretary John Kerry started the event through a connection from Washington. Innovation and sustainability in American food 2.0.

With the traditional ceremony of the laying of the first stone, on Wednesday 16th July works for the construction of the American pavilion for Expo Milano 2015 started. The event was introduced by the words of the Secretary of State of the United States, John Kerry, who followed the ceremony from Washington through simultaneous connection with Milan. «Food security is especially dear to the Obama administration. By 2050 the global population will reach  9 billion and we need to boost food production by 60%, but with sustainable means. We can’t achieve this goal without innovation and best practices. Expo will be an opportunity for our scientists, entrepreneurs and farmers to share their innovations».

An active Farm
The first symbolic spading was given, together with the US Ambassador to Italy, John Phillips, by the Sole Commissioner for Expo, Giuseppe Sala, the President of Lombardy, Roberto Maroni and the Mayor of Milan, Giuliano Pisapia. The American pavilion, designed by architect James Biber, will have as theme ‘American Food 2.0: United to feed the planet’ and will show to visitors the role of the United States for the future of nutrition worldwide. Inside the pavilion there will be a fully functional vertical farm. Here will be celebrated the history of agriculture in the United States and its innovation-led successes.

Workshops dedicated to innovation  in Nutrition
During the six months of the event, the pavilion, financed by organizations and companies whose entrance was coordinated by the organization Friends of the USA pavilion Milano 2015, will host events, shows and workshops dedicated to innovation in nutrition. The theme of nutrition «is certainly a challenge for every Country all over the world – said during the ceremony the US Ambassador to Italy, John Phillips – a challenge that we must tackle today, trying to combine innovation, technology and good practices to produce high-quality nutritious and healthy food»

Not only fast Food
The pavilion will tell American food that, just like American people, is very variegated, trying to explode some myths on it. «American cuisine is rich in thrilling innovation – added the board of directors of Friends of the USA pavilion Milano 2015, Jerry Giaquinta – no longer only fast food, but young chefs that are continuing a message of high and sustainable cuisine». The Universal Exposition will also be «an opportunity of business and meeting between Italian and American companies that still didn’t invest on our Country – said the managing director of the American chamber of commerce in Italy, Simone Crolla – and a way to make Italy known by American companies, which could decide to invest on our Country».
