Theme for UN Participation in Expo Milano 2015: “The Zero Hunger Challenge. United for a Sustainable World”
United we can build a world within our lifetimes where all people, at all times, have access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food and lead healthy and productive lives, without compromising the needs of future generations.
This concept is summed up in the Zero Hunger Challenge launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2012. The UN System will bring this vision to Expo Milano 2015, demonstrating to visitors how it is possible to end hunger in our lifetime, how this can only be achieved if we work together and how they can and need to be part of the solution.
The Zero Hunger Challenge consists of five pillars:
- Zero stunted children less than 2 years
- 100% access to adequate food all year round
- All food systems are sustainable
- 100% increase in smallholder productivity and income
- Zero loss or waste of food.
An integral part of all five pillars, the issue of women’s empowerment and gender equality will be a key focus area at Expo Milano 2015.
UN Participation Model
Given the synergies between the theme of Expo Milano 2015 and the mandate of the UN, the UN System has been recognized as a key International Participant at Expo Milano 2015. For the first time in the history of Universal Expositions, the UN will not have a single pavilion but instead a horizontal involvement with exhibits in numerous areas throughout the Expo Site. Up to eighteen giant spoon installations will represent the five pillars of the Zero Hunger Challenge, women’s empowerment and gender equality and other UN content related to Expo’s thematic areas. Together, the UN spoons will act as beacons linking content and events along the UN Zero Hunger Itinerary.
The UN Itinerary
The UN’s giant blue spoons will bring the itinerary to life. Spanning the whole exposition site, the itinerary will start at Pavilion Zero, located at the main entrance to Expo Milano, where visitors will be introduced to the Expo’s theme and after travelling through the pavilion’s various rooms, they will have a chance to discover the strong link between Expo’s theme and the mission of the United Nations.
One of the highlights of the itinerary will be the UN Garden located at the beginning of the Decumano. This green area will give visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in projects and field operations carried out by the agencies of the United Nations System from emergency responses to development projects.
By visiting Pavilion Zero and the UN Garden, visitors will be introduced to the “Zero Hunger Challenge”, which will link UN content in all nine clusters and the thematic areas, from the Biodiversity Park to the Future Food District and the Children’s Park, an area where UN content will be specifically designed for small children.
Through videos, photos, infographics and maps, the spoon installations will demonstrate the work that the UN carries out on a daily basis to increase access to food and natural resources and to guarantee a sustainable future for our planet. The blue UN spoons will therefore create an educational and interactive itinerary and clearly showcase the UN’s message: how it is possible to end hunger in our lifetime, how this can only be achieved if we work together and how everyone can and needs to be part of the solution.
UN - Expo Days
The UN will celebrate three UN Days at Expo Milano 2015 where a large part of the Expo Site will be transformed according to UN colors and branding. Every Expo Participant will be invited to join the UN System in celebrating:
1. World Environment Day (5 June)
2. World Humanitarian Day (19 August)
3. World Food Day (16 October).
